Inspections and Market Surveillance

​Scope

Inspections and Market Surveillance are essential for ensuring proper implementation of the Council Regulations, Commission Regulations, EU Directives as well as National Legislation that fall within the remit of the Agriculture Directorate. These include:

  • Producer Organisations and Producer Groups,
  • Marketing Standards regarding fruit and vegetables
  • Use of mineral and organic fertilisers according to the Nitrates Action Programme
  • Soil Movement
  • Organic production and labelling
  • Viticulture Oenology and labelling
  • Olives and Olive Oil

Objective:

Agriculture Directorate executes administrative and on the spot inspections to ensure that farmers, producers and retailers are compliant with the applicable regulations and EU directives. While inspections are conducted on farms and related agri-environmental issues, such as nitrates and soil , market surveillance, which is a type of inspection, is carried out on the agricultural markets, regarding the labelling standards of Olives, Wines, Organic products, and the marketing standards of Fruit and Vegetables. 

Functions:

  • The update and maintenance of a software control system and land registry of all farm holdings (land and livestock farms).
  • Evaluates non-compliances detected and provide justification of any non-compliance (for which an enforcement notice is to be issued or not).
  • Perform convocations in informing farmers, retailers and producers of findings and hold meetings between the respective stakeholders.
